Rain, Fenders, Misc…

It's been a rainy late spring so far.  I was skeptical about the early forecast for a cooler and rainier summer than average, but I guess that's holding true.

My ride in this morning was quite pleasant with full fenders, wool clothing and a bike driven by a belt.  I remain super-impressed with the belt system.  Once you get it tensioned, it's truly a ride it and forget it system.  Totally silent and essentially maintenence free, it's the ultimate for day-in-day-out commuting.

In related news, Civia is expanding its selection of fenders.  We are growing both our selection of metal fenders and venturing into polycarbonate (plastic) fenders.  We're updating our Hyland fenders for the same great coverage, but with better attachments and hardware.  We're also introducing flat aluminum fenders and will offer a rounded stainless steel steel fender in a 45mm width and an ample rubber tail.

I'm excited about our plastic fenders.  We took a look at the tried and true plastic fender and feel we've improved on it in a couple ways: We went slightly wider than some of the other ones on the market with our 700c fenders coming in 40 and 50mm widths for today's wider tires.  We also improved the hardware spec with stainless bolts on the middle and high end fenders.  They also feature bolts with captured washers so you don't have to worry about which washer goes with which bolt.  Lastly, we added our 3 dot logo in a reflective material to the back of each fender, so you get a little branding that isn't overwhelming and is actually functional.  We're expecting these to be available in early-middle August.  We're offering three levels of plastic fender and pricing starts around $30 and goes up towards $50.

Lastly, we're going to be releasing our 2011 catalog for some early season promotion around the middle of July.  We'll be introducing some fun things in there, so keep your eyes open for it.  The parts we're unveiling will start trickling in shortly afterwards.  New bikes, if there are any, wouldn't be until February-ish and no models are going away...

Enjoy!

Speaking of a Belt Drive bike. When will we be seeing the Bryant Belt drive in stores. I heard from my dealer that they’re backordered.

Scott Thayer | June 14th, 2010

Backordered, yes, though coming soon.  We’ve finally got the components and are starting to assemble them.  We’re shipping our first small quantity today with a few more to go out tomorrow.

It’s going to be about 2 weeks before our complete first order ships.  We are pre-sold on everything we have right now.  Our next order will be arriving August/September timetable.

I’m hoping to get a Bryant frame through my local Civia importer here in NZ.  Are you also expecting frames to become available in Aug/Sep as well?  When ordering the frames, do you have to specify horizontal dropouts if the bike is intended for a belt drive train, or do dropouts have to be ordered separately?  Could you also tell me if the fenders shown on Bryants are the standard Civia fenders that can be ordered for 700c wheels?

BTW, saw a gorgeous chainguard on the photo that comes up when you click on Bryant.  Is that a stainless or aluminium production chainguard?  Can this be ordered separately as well?  Beautiful unit, great design!

Hi Wei,

Frames should be that same time frame.  For the importer, by chance are you referring to Cycle Supplies?

The fenders shown on the Bryant can be ordered aftermarket, yes.

Thanks for the compliments on the chainguard.  It’s polished aluminum and is stock on all Bryant Belt builds.  It will be available aftermarket roughly around the same time.  Price to be determined.

Hi Scott,
Yes I was referring to Dave at Cycle Supplies.  He has been great to deal with.  Look forward to when the Bryant “trickles down” to us here in New Zealand.

Every time I read about your Hyland belt drive commutes and how nice the belt is in the rain, it makes me jealous. I commute 14 miles a day in Seattle with a lot of rain and I have been patently waiting for a Hyland belt drive bike to be announced.
I am so tired of my chain maintenance and sprocket marks that I am going to make a personnel plea for you to offer a Hyland belt drive bicycle.
While your at it offer an Alfine 11sp hub and I will pre-order it today!

Scott Thayer | July 2nd, 2010

Hi Jon, thanks for your loyal attention to the ins and outs of my commute.  There’s nothing formal to announce, though both belt drive and Alfine 11 are topics of serious discussion.  What I can tell you is that we won’t be in a position to show anything new on the Hyland front at Interbike in September.  Our efforts have been elsewhere expanding the line.  As always, keep coming back…  We’ll be taking an order from you soon enough!
